Here is the Hungarian government’s big announcement concerning utility prices

A government decree published on Friday included a passage concerning utility prices. According to the decree, the following entities will have access to natural gas at a fixed price from March until the end of September: budgetary bodies, local and national governments and their institutions, state and municipal companies and churches.

Fixed utility prices

The Association of Hungarian Local Governments (Magyar Önkormányzatok Szövetsége) had already indicated in September that they would like a price cap on energy purchases by local governments. The reason is that the price explosion has caused gas and electricity bills to increase eight to ten times. And, local governments, which have been hit by government cuts, cannot afford to pay for them themselves, 444.hu reports.

Submission of the declaration of eligibility

According to the Ministry of Energy (Energiaügyi Minisztérium), those wishing to switch to fixed utility prices must declare to their gas trader that they are eligible and will benefit from the revised accounting. The declaration can be submitted via the electronic interface provided by the institution’s gas trader for a period of 5 working days until midnight on 27 January 2023. The deadline is time-barred and only the declaration submitted in full via the trader’s electronic platform is valid. The price calculated on the basis of the methodology set out in the Regulation will be communicated to customers by e-mail within two weeks.

In the case of the state-owned MVM Next Energiakereskedelmi Zrt., around 900 business partners can meet the legal criteria.
